For the first book of the month, I decided to start with the basics of Value Investing. The author, Christopher Browne, was an expert in the field with his firm having the likes of Benjamin Graham and Warren Buffet as clients. He also brought a lifetime of experience to the table with his Value Funds beating the markets during his lifetime.
In his book, Browne walks us through the main principles of Value Investing and what makes a stock a good value pick without diving into too much of the details. The Little Book of Value Investing is an easy read and can be absorbed by any new or experienced investor.
Overall, this is a great first step into investing and I highly recommend it. That said, I took a step back and gave some positive and negative points below so that you can determine if Browne’s book is worth your time.
Pros
- Provides the basic principles of Value Investing and everything a beginner would need to know on the topic.
- Gives a brief history of how Value Investing came into being.
- Looks at where value can be hidden and how to tell if a company is financially healthy.
Cons
- Does not go into depth on the topic, provides more of a beginner’s guide.
- Browne wrote this book in 2006, so some of the topics are outdated and don’t reference the current market.
- Browne’s point of view is biased towards value-based investing as opposed to other styles.
